Free Online Class for Parents!

The National Federation of High Schools has posted a new online education opportunity for parents.

The Role of Parents In Sports

As a parent of a student who participates in athletics, you make a huge difference in the quality of your child’s sport experience, as well as what is being taught and learned by our youth. The National Federation of State High School Associations has provided information and resources to help educate you on the importance of proper behavior by parents in school sports.

The MIAA Board of Directors adopted the following during its June meeting.

Any athlete who exhibits signs, symptoms, or behaviors consistent with a concussion (such as loss of consciousness, headache, dizziness, confusion, or balance problems) shall be immediately removed from the contest and shall not return to play until cleared by an appropriate health-care professional.

Each school must define the health care professional(s) and/or procedure(s) that must be satisfied before an athlete is allowed to return to participation.  The individual(s) and/or procedure(s) must be in place for all student athletes, sports, and levels. Please see the student handbook for Duxbury's procedures.

STOP Sports Injuries

There is a growing epidemic of preventable youth sports injuries that are dismantling kids' athletic hopes and dreams at an early age. In response, the STOP Sports Injuries campaign was created by a coalition of organizations and corporations to help prevent athletic overuse and trauma injuries in kids. In addition, a Council of Champions has been established that includes business, sports and medical leaders to actively engage youth sports parents, coaches, athletes and healthcare providers in sports injury prevention.

MIAA Bona Fide Team Member Rule:

A bona fide member of the school team is a student who is consistently present for, and actively participates in, all high school team practices and competitions. Bona fide members of a school team are precluded from missing a high school practice or competition in order to participate in a non school activity/event in any sport recognized by the MIAA. Any student who violates this standard twice becomes ineligible for the MIAA tournament(s) in that sport for that season.
