MIAA Board of Directors Rule on Concussion Management

The MIAA Board of Directors adopted the following during its June meeting.

Any athlete who exhibits signs, symptoms, or behaviors consistent with a concussion (such as loss of consciousness, headache, dizziness, confusion, or balance problems) shall be immediately removed from the contest and shall not return to play until cleared by an appropriate health-care professional.

Each school must define the health care professional(s) and/or procedure(s) that must be satisfied before an athlete is allowed to return to participation.  The individual(s) and/or procedure(s) must be in place for all student athletes, sports, and levels.

School and athletic leaders are reminded that football and ice hockey currently have rules regarding health care professionals

Please read the Student-Athlete Handbook For Duxbury High School's Concussion Management Plan

STOP Sports Injuries

There is a growing epidemic of preventable youth sports injuries that are dismantling kids' athletic hopes and dreams at an early age. In response, the STOP Sports Injuries campaign was created by a coalition of organizations and corporations to help prevent athletic overuse and trauma injuries in kids. In addition, a Council of Champions has been established that includes business, sports and medical leaders to actively engage youth sports parents, coaches, athletes and healthcare providers in sports injury prevention.

MIAA Bona Fide Team Member Rule:

A bona fide member of the school team is a student who is consistently present for, and actively participates in, all high school team practices and competitions. Bona fide members of a school team are precluded from missing a high school practice or competition in order to participate in a non school activity/event in any sport recognized by the MIAA. Any student who violates this standard twice becomes ineligible for the MIAA tournament(s) in that sport for that season.
